RSD2018 How To Buy

REMARQUABLE TIPS FOR RECORD STORE DAY PURCHASING

RECORD STORE DAY (RSD) seems to evoke one of three main reactions.
Some people get excited and go crazy palpitating profusely about numbered limited editions, random coloured vinyl editions and love the thrill of queues and the frenzy of a treasure hunt. Other people feel anger, real tangible anger, effin’ over priced, effin’ queuing, effin’ ain’t got any of what I wanted in my effin’ record shop, effin’ traders selling what I wanted on eBay for effin’ 5 x the overpriced shop price… effin’ effin’… etc
And for the rest of us it’s just another Saturday.

Here’s a few tips we’ve picked up over the eleven years of RSD, they are neither guaranteed as Gospel nor hypothetical fake-ery, they are simply what we’ve experienced. There’s no reason to assume they won’t be valid this year too.

TIP #1 – PRICES: Remarquable distributes records from the UK, and it goes without saying the price will likely be less in the UK than overseas. ROUGH TRADE’s online store is a good indicator of a price to expect. In the USA AMOEBA online is a good indicator of the expected US price.

TIP #2 – ONLINE SEARCHING: Note that as these are RSD releases you may have to search for the title and record shop name in your web browser of choice as their websites may not offer an advanced search for RSD products.

TIP #3 – RECORD SHOPS: As is the spirit of RSD, the element of randomness is carved into the culture of the event and as such trying to figure out what shops have the record(s) you want, and what variant they may actually have could be tricky.

  • Check the official RSD sites in your territory to find participating record shops
    eg RSD-UK https://recordstoreday.co.uk/stores/
    RSD-USA https://recordstoreday.com/Stores
  • Check out your local record shop, and if you don’t have one in your locality, go through the list – thy picking out the bigger name stores as they are likely to get more titles and more stock – and check out their websites for listings of the record(s) you want. If it is listed bookmark them, as after the actual day you can email them to find out if they have left over stock. Most shops have left over stock for most titles that lasts a couple of weeks before selling out.
  • From midnight on the 28th April record shops can sell left over stock online. If you found an online store that lists the record(s) you want drop them an email before the 28th to check if they have copies, and check which variant edition they have, so that on the 28th you can go to their online store and buy a copy.

TIP #4 – eBAY / DISCOGS / etc: On Record Store Day you will find a lot of RSD products being sold online by scalpers. DO NOT BUY THESE OVERPRICED CHANCERS RECORDS unless of course you have lots of cash and are happy to pay for the convenience of getting it asap. Most of these people drop their prices to more normal prices after a week when RSD shops start selling their left over stock online for the same price they sold them on RSD itself. Hold your nerve, don’t panic and let karma work for you! Seriously if are really stuck after the 28th April and no one has any then contact us an and we’ll try and find a shop that has copies of what you are after.

TIP #5 – SO ALONESOME VARIANTS
